Understanding Point of Sale (POS)
At its core, a Point of Sale (POS) system is the terminal where a customer completes a payment for products or services at your store. However, modern POS platforms do much more than collect cash. They act as the central brain of your entire retail business.
How a Retail POS System Works
When a customer brings items to the register checkout counter:
- The cashier scans the product barcode or selects it from the digital catalog grid.
- The POS calculates the item prices, applies discounts, computes taxes, and updates stock balances.
- The customer pays via Cash, Card, or UPI scan.
- The system prints a thermal receipt or emails a digital E-bill, logging the sale in the ledger.
Business Benefits of POS
Using a dedicated retail platform saves hours of manual calculations, eliminates pricing discrepancies, prevents cashier errors, and provides you with accurate daily sales summaries to guide restocking decisions.
